MWDesign | E92 M3 Amuse-Ericsson “Darth Maul”

After modifying Alpine White M3 after Alpine White M3 after Alpine White M3, we were ecstatic to have the opportunity to take on a brand new E92 M3 coupe build in Jerez Black. For this project, we wanted to build something insane yet cohesive and classy at the same time. We truly put our CONCEPTuning approach to a serious test on this custom project.

The M3 was completely built beforehand using computer rendering and quick hand sketches to determine all the parts and colors for the entire project in our CONCEPTuning process. To create an extremely aggressive feel, we started the black-out theme by removing all chrome pieces. Matte black grills, carbon fiber side vents and carbon fiber mirror covers were added to enhance this look. Small touches such as grey BMW roundels and high gloss tinted rear taillights were added to emphasize this look.  On items even as minor as roundel colors, we make sure the color selected does not detract from the overall theme. In this case, grey is perfect for a monochromatic theme with a bright twist. For the tinted taillights, this is a procedure often done terribly wrong. We had to ensure that quality was not lost in any step of the project and we tinted the proper way using high gloss tinted clearcoat to keep the details and silhouette of the taillights and DOT approval stamps intact.

To break out the vehicle from the standard and often washed out looking full black-out theme, we decided to go for a hint of bold color. Because this car came equipped with the Fox Red Novillo Leather interior, we had to find an accenting color to play off of the interior. We quickly tossed out the idea of using red contrast, as that would be too easy and is far too commonly overdone. Like a minimalist’s approach to interior design, we decided to counter the black with one of the boldest colors in the color palette, orange. The process of selecting the perfect orange is not so simple. To ensure that the whole vehicle looks cohesive and unified, we have to take all factors and details of the car into play and due to the Fox Red interior being more on the orange scale, we had to find an orange that fell into the redder side of the color charts to make the theme work.

After this process is complete, we have to finalize the parts required for the modification and decide where to insert the colored accents. For the colored accents, we had to make sure that the flashes of color were minimal, yet extremely visually bold and effective. After a few concept renderings and much discussion, our color scheme was finalized and we decided to go forward with the Amuse Ericsson front bumper, Amuse Ericsson trunk lid and the Vorsteiner Type 2 carbon fiber rear diffuser for the main aerodynamics portion of the build. We are proud to have this project build credited as the first Amuse Ericsson E92 M3 in Canada.

For wheels, our good friends at Modulare Wheels decided to come aboard and sponsor the project after we had contacted them with our wheel design layout. To emphasize the aggressive nature of the vehicle, we opted for the M6 mesh style to begin our tailored order. In accordance to our renderings, we ordered the wheel with the following options: Matte black powdercoated wheel face, gloss black outer wheel lips, gloss black hardware, optional matte black aluminum engraved centercap in a 20x9” front size and 20x10.5” rear size. Once we received the wheels, we had the etched center caps and valve caps masked and painted in our custom orange color. MWDesign logos were placed on the gloss wheel lips in a matte black finish to provide a subtle trademark instead of using massive and unsightly stickers and decals. We made sure to balance the interplay of matte black, gloss black and orange in the wheel to create a highly complex and dimensional custom wheel without becoming overly gaudy and busy in terms of design.

We had originally mounted these amazing made to order wheels on 245/30/20F and 285/25/20R Falken FK452’s but Toyo has recently stepped in and has become a sponsor for the vehicle. The Falkens have now been swapped in favour of Toyo’s top line street tire, the T1-R in 245/30/20F and 305/25/20R.

To close the fender gap with this wide wheel and tire setup, we selected H&R race springs as our client did not want the vehicle too low or harsh for daily driving.

Once all of the aero parts had arrived, we brought them to our friends at Edelweiss body shop. We test fitted the Amuse aerodynamics parts and began preparing them. Prior to clearcoating, we had masked off an area to emphasize the carbon fiber laid lower splitters and rear boot lip edge. The cheap looking chicken wire mesh that came with the Amuse bumper was scrapped quickly in exchange for an open setup. A custom lower bumper “filler” piece was fabricated to connect the gap between rubber seal area to the new bumper.  This detail that we changed on the bumper had never been done before and truly added extra depth and dimension to the front end. Custom orange accents were then applied to emphasize the aggressively angled front air dams and in the exhaust portion of the Vorsteiner rear diffuser. In our opinion, these accents worked perfectly in conjunction with the orange outlined aluminum centercaps and aluminum valve stem caps without being too random or overdone.

After the build was completed, we had informally given the project a code name of “Darth Maul” on our E90 and M3post community due to the black and reddish-orange color scheme. We had absolutely no idea that the vehicle would become so hugely popular on the internet, and with that instant popularity the moniker “Darth Maul” has stuck with the vehicle. Just to clarify, we have no associations with Lucasarts Entertainment Company LLC, but we do love their films!

Since the photoshoot has taken place, we have been planning STAGE 2. We have been in contacts with our strategic partners over at IND Distribution, G-Power Germany, and Brembo USA for the next part of our build.
